There are 2 main type of Ethernet Cable wiring standards. They apply to any given stretch of cable, either from Patch Panel to Jack, or RJ45 plug to RJ45 plug, or a combo of the same. Here are the diagrams for 568B and 568A:

1. 1. For patch cables, 568-B wiring is by far, the most common method.
2. There is no difference in connectivity between 568B and 568A cables. Either wiring should work fine on any system.
3. For a straight through cable, wire both ends identical. (For STANDARD router/switch to PC)
4. For a crossover cable, (OR Punch/Jack to Plug) wire one end 568A and the other end 568B. (for connecting PC to PC, or a new wiring run from the punch panel to the jack.
